What I Wish I'd Known in Our First Year
When we started homeschooling eight years ago, I was equal parts excited and terrified. I had a stack of curriculum, a laminated schedule, and absolutely no idea what I was doing. Looking back now, with three kids and a lot of hard-won lessons behind me, here are the things I wish someone had told me at the start.
You will do too much at first — and that's okay
My first year, I tried to recreate a full classroom day at home. It lasted about three weeks before we were all miserable. What I learned is that homeschooling isn't school-at-home; it's something gentler and more flexible. Once I let go of the idea that we had to fill six hours a day, everything got better.
The hard days aren't a verdict
There will be days when nothing goes right, when someone cries (sometimes you), when you wonder if you've made a terrible mistake. Those days are normal. They are not a sign that you should quit. Every homeschool parent I know has had them, and the good days far outnumber them in the end.
Find your people
The loneliest part of my first year was thinking I was the only one struggling. The moment I found a local co-op and a few honest friends, everything changed. Homeschooling is so much lighter when you're not carrying it alone.
If you're just starting out, be patient with yourself. You're learning right alongside your kids, and that's exactly as it should be. It gets easier, and it's worth it.
